Types of Home Additions

Home additions vary depending on the purpose of the space. They can be constructed to provide additional living space, improve aesthetics or create a recreational area.

In this post, Owens Construction discusses the different types of home additions that you can build on your property.

Standard House Addition

This is the most common type of home addition used to increase space and is placed adjacent to the primary living areas. It can consist of multiple rooms and serve various functions. With proper construction and customization, it can blend seamlessly into your main building’s architecture. This type of home addition is versatile and can be converted into any room of your preference. It can be a dining area, a recreational area, or guest lodging.

Bump Out or Room Addition

A room addition or bump out is an addition that is meant for a single purpose — increasing living space. It can be turned into another bedroom or bathroom. Sometimes, it is simply meant to expand an already existing room. This addition may be less expensive than a standard house addition, but prices and quality vary depending on materials, design and features.

Garage Conversion

Garages are often turned into additional living spaces since these areas have all the necessities to create a bedroom or living room. They have a solid structure, a functioning electrical system and a few windows. Garages are converted by installing a ceiling, swapping out the garage door with a wall and installing the proper flooring material.
