To Raise or Not to Raise Your Ceilings

Renovation projects aimed to drastically change the look and feel of your interiors tend to focus more on small details and elements. Hiring a home remodeling company to raise your ceiling, however, does not fall into this category. Architecture legend Frank Lloyd Wright advocated higher ceilings to help people feel like they’re stepping into a completely different space. The trend caught on and by the mid-century, plenty of homes showcased high 8 to 9 foot ceilings, no matter what style of home they have.

Wright’s original design concepts were lost as a lot of people embraced the luxury and extravagance of raised ceilings. Today, the popularity of this idea has taken quite a hit. If you’re considering raising your ceiling, our experts at Owens Construction recommend sticking to Wright’s original objectives. Here are a few tips to help you get started.

    Do It With Other Projects

Raised ceilings are mostly for aesthetics so not many homeowners do it as a standalone project, but if you can piggyback on ongoing work like a kitchen renovation, the whole process can be achieved easily. On its own, raising ceiling heights is expensive, involving reconfiguring weight distribution of your entire roof. Major remodels like adding or removing walls already do this, so it makes sense to tackle raised ceilings at the same time.

    Unique Homes

Every home is different so there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to raising ceilings. Work with an experienced design-build contractor who can adapt the design changes you make to the limitations of your house.

    Don’t Raise the Ceilings?

There are a lot of advantages to raised ceilings but, sometimes, it’s simply not possible to do it. Before you hire remodeling contractors to take on this project, consider other “vertical tricks” to give your home more height, in a manner of speaking. Vertical wall panels, higher windows, or lowering the ceiling on entrances and thresholds are just a few ways to make your ceiling appear higher than it actually is.
