How to Remodel Your Home With Accessibility in Mind

If you or a family member is one of the millions in the country who are living with a disability or limited mobility, your home should be designed to provide the right amount of convenience and comfort. Remodeling it around a disability is easier said than done, of course, which is why it’s much better to work with trusted contractors who have the right knowledge and experience to know which modifications are needed for those with physical limitations.

Owens Construction, a reputable name in bathroom and kitchen renovation, shares how you can remodel with safety and accessibility in mind.

Bathroom Features to Consider

Bathrooms are one of the high-risk areas for accidental slips and falls in your home, so you should make it a priority to get the right kind of accessibility features that ensure the safety of those with limited mobility. A few accessibility features to consider include:

  • Grab bars. These are handlebars placed at contact points within your bathroom space, such as the vanity, toilet, shower, and bathtub. They help provide greater stability for the elderly and those who are on a wheelchair.
  • Walk-in showers. Shower floors must be at the same level as the rest of the bathroom floor to make the area more wheelchair-accessible. Also, consider converting your bathtub into a walk-in shower to open the whole space further.
  • Lowered sink and vanity – This is also meant to add more convenience to those in wheelchairs so that they can reach these areas more easily.

Kitchen Features to Consider

You can also discuss with your preferred home remodeling company how they can design and remodel your kitchen space based on the accessibility needs and preferences of your family member who has limited mobility. Such features and modifications can include:

  • Well-placed power outlets. By relocating the kitchen’s power outlets to more accessible locations, it can make a big difference in plugging and unplugging appliances for wheelchair users. This can also be applied to other areas of your home!
  • Multi-level counters and lowered cabinets – To make food prep and cooking easier and more accessible, consider lowering the height of the kitchen countertops. Adding pull-out drawers also adds more convenience while making it easier to find and use different cookware.
  • Wheelchair ramps. This modification can be a good alternative in providing accessibility in the kitchen space. You can also consider adding this to the entryways of your home for added convenience.
